After the exciting antics in the saranda football stadium (aka a modern day Roman ampi-theatre), the team decided that it was time for another not so secret suflaqe...
We were met by a flock of smiling sheep heads, rotating on a spit. It surprised us that despite their rather unfortunate circumstances, they were grinning with white teeth bared...Ali was toying with the idea tucking into a head, but held off last night. He has said he will though, so watch this space!!!!
Later on that evening, the team walked down to the rocks with guitar in tow. In the most beautiful setting with the distant lights of corfu, the stars above and a mighty ocean crashing at our feet, we worshipped God until the early hours of the morning. It truly was a blessed time.
Suffice to say, a very tired team embarked on the mountainous trek to the first of our three church services for the day...ok so it wasn't acutally a mountain but in this heat and with the sarandan inclines, it might as well have been!!! The Baptist Church was fuller than usual as our mission team were joined by two others from England and America. Sion and Sarah led the congregation in three Albanian/ English songs and a representative from each team shared testimonies.
After the service, we split into two teams with half attending the Pentecostal and the other, the Greek Evangelical. Both services were good, but the team was anticipating an afternoon in the sea as it is extremely hot inside today!
This is where we must part once more our friends. As we write this blog, we are yearning for chocolate spread, feta & bread...ok so maybe not quite - im sad to say that fresh bread has lost its appeal : ( but the food is fresh and filling - until tomorrow! Carpe Diem...

Saturday 23rd August
Yesterday we finished painting at the Greek Evangelical Church which was a great challenge given the seering heat of the offices. Most of it ended up on the painters but luckily some landed on the walls!!!
In the evening we took the translators, Diti and Odeta, out to dinner. It was a great time of fellowship and gave us the opportunity to continue builiding relationships with them.
This morning we went to Kids Church at 4 square. Diti lead worship with Sarah and quite a few kids turned up- about 20- a vast improvement on the 3 that were there last week!!
Ali spoke on the Good Samaritan with another Oscar worthy performance from Matt.
In the afternoon we all went to Cuke where Sion lead worship outside the church while several brave members of the team inhaled paint fumes in what was possibly the hottest house in the whole world. There was a mob for clothes and presents as these were given out to the women, but luckily no fights broke out this week!!!
The lads played some footy with a group of Albanian guys. With amazing skills and talent of the Englush (and Diti!) we were able to uphold our nations legacy. Who needs the world Cup?!

Hey everyone, thanks for all your prayers and support, we really appreciate it! Everyone is now fit and healthy which is great. So what have we been up to?...
Thursday afternoon - after our S4C dosage, Jackie and Katy headed off for Cuke to join in with the school and to play some games. Chloe, Steve, Matt and Rachel donned their painting clothes and headed off to the Greek Evangelical Church's new building to paint some rooms. Some seemed to get a fair amount of paint on themselves as well as on the wall! Sarah, Ruth and Ali were at the prayer meeting at the church down the road. It was really encouraging to be able to spend time praying with the members of this church. Also Anna and Sion arrived safely- a day earlier than expected which was great. It was lovely to see them and have the team complete!
Matt and Ali have naughtily established the SS society (a.k.a Secret Suflacce Society) - in other words they were too hungry to wait for dinner and sneaked out to the local Sufflace place before going out (-and just for the record it wasn't for pizza!).
Today - Katy and Rachel had an early morning trip to Cuke at 8.30, extra Pharisee points for them! Meanwhile, the rest of the team had a great time at Kid's Club. Sarah and Laura used the Rainbow fish story to teach the children about the importance of sharing and loving God and one another. The face paints made a appearance much to the children's delight.
Some of the lads went to visit Kiko (the drummer from church) this afternoon to take him some clothes and meet his family. They really enjoyed their visit and have been invited back to sample some homemade raki!
Thanks for all your posts- it's really great to hear from you.
Ali's Mum- we'll ask about the teddy!
That's all folks. It's now time for S4C which again has been expanded to Snoozing for Christ, preferably whilst Sunbathing for Christ!

Wednesday's events
Wow, where should we start???
Tuesday evening we had a 'jamming' worship sess with Diti (one of our translators) in the local church. The kids loved it, but it was a tad loud for some of the local residents!!
Wednesday- Rachel, Ali and Matt joined Bedro on one of her regular visits to Cuke. The children sang for them, recited poems and bible stories and enjoyed relay and parachute games in the sweltering heat......even the children were complaining of the heat and they live here!!!!
Meanwhile, the rest of the guys were running kid's club. The kids learned about Daniel in the lion's den, which was lead by Laura and Sarah. Janet Wilson's beautifully handcrafted puppet Bimi made a special guest appearance and there were lots of exciting games and crafts to teach the kids about prayer.
We have also expanded our S4C ministry to include Snorkelling for Christ! still being enjoyed by all :)
In the afternoon, some of the girls took the local women out for coffee and ice-cream. They had a lovely afternoon and the women were really touched by the time spent with them. Everyone had chance to share testimonies. The women said they look forward to us visiting every year, and especially for this coffee and chat time....which this year lasted a record of about 3 hours if not longer!
Last night, it was Pizza again! Our waiter now knows what pizzas and drinks we all like, he doesn't even bother giving us a menu now and likes to try and guess our order. This time we had Odetta and Diti (translators) with us, so he had two new orders to remember. A few of us wandered along the promenade and found a bar to sit and enjoy the rest of the evening before the tiredness kicked in.
Today - Ruth led kid's club this morning on the healing of the paralysed man. More fun, games, crafts and songs were enjoyed and our Albanian singing is improving (a little!). The numbers have dropped a little, but there was still a good turn out.
Over the last few and next few days, the team are visiting local residents delivering some of the clothes for their families. We are often given food which we have to gratefully stomach, Ruth, Jackie and Steve had to eat a plate of fig jam each...mmmm, yumm!
Genci (translator) has now left Seranda, we thought it was only for a few days, but turns out he won't be back, so we are one translator down. Please pray for the others, that they will have the time alongside other commitments to help us out.
Update on the sickies...Most people are now on the mend, but Carl and Matt are still suffering!
Update on the bite count....the mozzies are having a party!
Update on the weather....still hot!
Better be going, it's lunch time, yup you guessed it, feta, bread, tomatoes and of course, chocolate spread!

Tuesday 19th August
Well to pick up from Sunday evening/ we apologise again for the Internet is crazy, and we are trying to mail you lots. But going up and down lots of steps in sizzling (high 30's) takes it's toll!
Sunday evening was church service at 4 square church pentecostal, we thing we will have diamonds in our crowns in heaven as that was our 4Th services of the day. The worship was incredible again a joint UK Albania adventure and Carl spoke on making sure that Christ was at the centre of your heart in everything you do. Really good night. I think we ate pizza well it's a good guess as we have eaten pizza most nights. Excellent it is too, enormous and only 3 pounds.
Monday-
Steve and Matt arrived at about 9.00, Matt announcing his arrival by smashing a glass. The noise level has risen considerably. We would value your prayers for health for the whole team as Matt is not well, nor is Sarah, Laura, Ali and Katie.
We started off with Kidz Club 10-12 and about 35 turned up which is verging on the rooms capacity. Crazy mix of games, story, worship and crafts which worked really well. Our Albania translators are being fantastic and are turning up on all the occasions we have needed them- a real answer to prayer. Rach and Katie taught on the lost sheep- Jackie, Katie and Chloe were great sheep! The room was suffocatingly hot and the aroma was non too sweet. The kids seemed to love it and we had to chase them out.
Our stable lunch diet evolves around Feta, Tomatoes more feta and to top it off Chocolate spread. In fact the chocolate spread seems to feature in most meals. We should take out shares or arrange sponsorship.
After lunch it was the compulsory S4C, temperatures continue to sizzle. We do enjoy it when horizontal on the beach or in the sea, but working in these temperatures is some challenge, and some of the ill health related to the heat. Matt reported 2 tsunamis on the beach, most people would call them waves.
Ali and Rachel went off to Cuka with Vera who teaches there. They came back inspired by her devotion to the children in hoping to improve their lives as they learn to read and write. We feel there is a lot we can do in helping to resource this work. The children love parachute games.
Much as we love our time in Cuka, on arrival back there is a fight for the showers, and the clothes in the washing machine, as heads are alive and your never to sure what you are treading in.
More pizza.............. moonlight walks on the rocks.
Tuesday-
Today Kidz club again, maintained the same numbers which was exciting. Please pray we communicate the reality of relationship with Jesus that we are sharing something more than stories. Matt and Steve have slotted into the team very well and everyone seems improving health wise but please keep praying for protection.
Feta, Tomato, Feta, Chocolate spread.............
More S4C, not a cloud in the sky but the wind has picked up and the sea is rough. Jackie and Carl have the bruises to show from the bashing on the rocks.
Cuka- Ruth and Jackie went with Vera played interesting ball games and parachute games dodging cowpats and a horse. Sadly the midges were out in force and continue to find Ruth and Jakie very tasty. Jackie is in the lead for bites but Steve is a close second now as he was bitten to death in Corfu before arriving here. In fact his back looked like one big spot!!
That brings us to sitting here in the smokey Internet cafe but at least there is air con yeah!!!!!!!
Just off out you guessed it................
We have only had 2 posts we would love to hear from you, please write to us. apologise for any errros we are too weary to read it through!!

We are safe and well!....but not fans of the poor internet connection out here...
Well we are here, but are very sorry we haven't been able to update the blog for a while as the internet cafe is as unpredictable as the English summer - the weather here by the way is sunny and high 30s so we're doing our bit for the Kingdom ; )
Our journey out here started off well. We all managed to get all the gifts and items collected for the Albanian community packed into our bags, and with careful precision managed the required Easyjet 20kg maximum weight (thanks to Anna's packing skills). And after Bruce selflessly drove us at 3am to the airport, we found that Easyjet allowed us to take the keyboard as additional baggage for free!
We had a one day stop in Corfu before getting up to catch the ferry on to Saranda the next morning. Once at the Corfu port though we got to meet some of the locals...packed in amongst them inside a hot, sweaty room bustling towards the single door for the entrance to ferry port customs. We had no chance of getting through on the only ferry of the day and were looking at the prospect of spending yet another night in Corfu which didn't sit well with the budget, our plans or our patience. But with a quick phonecall from Ruth to our Greek guide, we were wisked out of the "queue" by one of the officials and into a side entrance (which by the way was wide, empty and air conditioned). So the British passports provailed! and we were on the boat to Saranda.
Since being here we have done so much already! On the Saturday the team attended the Baptist church's kids club where Sarah had a chance to help lead worship and Ali gave a talk(with the aid of translation). Although attendence was small, relationships with the few children and the church members were established and a real sense of fellowship between all was felt. We are very confident that like previous years, the numbers will increase rapidly over the course of our time there. Later that afternooon we journeyed off to the Chuka gypsy camp to attend their church service. Ali spoke again at this session (translated) and the community turned out to come to meet the team. Apart from some volatile confrontations between the locals, there was a clear expressin of joy at the sight of some of the familiar members of our team (from last year's trip), and at seeing new members as well. Although a short visit, it was blessed and we now have an idea of the practical aid work we can do there in support of the already established church.
Today (Sunday) we upped our Christian status by visiting 3 different church service! In the Baptisit church a joint service was held whereby we experienced their regular church service format (with some expert Alabanian singing from some of our team), but then led them in worship with the songs and structure of ministry we have at Vineyard to show them an alternate style. It was fantastic, and after Ruth led a talk, we had the opportunity to pray with the various members of the congregation. We got to share in worship our praise to the one God, transcending the different languages spoken.
But clearly you've been scanning through all this information to get to the really important stuff.....the mosquito bite count. The stakes are high and after last year's returning champions, Jackie and Ruth, we have all to play for. So most of the team are on equal pegging with the occasional bites, but Ruth is clearly leading and is even getting eaten during prayer sessions which she is gallantly enduring.
And obviously in and amongst all our work with the kids and the churches, we are finding time for beach missions such as our calling to Sunbathe for Christ (a.k.a S4C)! It is going well and is an area of ministry we are happy to expand upon....but sadly not back in the UK.
We are valuing your prayers and feel very encouraged by the support of you all back home. Pray for us tomorrow as we start the first of our kidz clubs - that the children who come meet with God and that we are able to build a relationship with both them and their families. Also prayer for our safety and wisdom is needed as we visit Chuka once more and hope to see where we can begin to provide support and aid.
More regular updates are promised especially as it is almost midnight now and the team have left me to go to bed : (
God bless you all and we'll be praying that some of our sun here makes its way over to you...

Albania has a total of 10 representatives at the Games this year: 3 athletes competing in Weightlifting, 2 wrestlers, 2 swimmers, 2 track athletes and one in the shooting events! Good luck guys - we'll be cheering for you.

welcome!!!
Welcome to RVC's Albania trip for 2008.
Reading Vineyard Church have been sending out teams to Saranda (situated on the southern tip of Albania) for over 6 years now, and as a church - we have had the opportunity to fund raise and provide the local residents with many necessities.
Among these - we have sent out two fire engines, an ambulance, sanitation at one of the gypsy camps, food, clothing, medical equipment, biblical literature and much more...
Over the years we have been able to witness the way God has moved (and continues to do so) among the Albanian people.
